About

A paraben-type preservative with endocrine-disrupting potential under regulatory scrutiny, permitted in the EU but restricted to 0.14% for individual parabens.

Pentylparaben (pentyl 4-hydroxybenzoate) is a paraben ester preservative active against bacteria and fungi in cosmetic formulations. Like other parabens, it has been evaluated by the SCCS and is currently permitted in the EU under Regulation 1223/2009, subject to concentration limits. However, parabens in general have been associated with endocrine-disrupting potential in scientific studies, leading to restrictions on certain paraben isomers (isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben) and specific concentration limits.

Skin benefits

  • Effective broad-spectrum preservative
  • Antimicrobial protection against bacteria and fungi
  • Extends product shelf life

Known concerns

  • Under EU regulatory review for endocrine-disrupting potential
  • SCCS opinion flags paraben concerns for reproductive effects
  • Maximum concentration limited in EU (0.14% for individual parabens)
  • Cumulative exposure concern with multiple paraben-containing products
