About

A fluorocarbon solvent in the PFAS family. Largely inert biologically, but extremely persistent — modern cosmetic regulation is phasing this class out.

Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (CAS 355-02-2) is a fully fluorinated cyclohexane — methylcyclohexane in which every hydrogen is replaced by fluorine. Chemically it is almost perfectly inert (low acute toxicity, no biological activity), which led to niche uses as a high-density solvent and historic use in some specialty cosmetic delivery systems. The problem is environmental: it is a PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance — and carbon-fluorine bonds are essentially non-degradable under environmental conditions. PFAS ingredients are globally restricted under the EU's PFAS restriction proposal (REACH), EPA rulings in the US, and state-level cosmetic PFAS bans (California, Maryland, New York). The compound also has a very high global warming potential. Use in cosmetics is rapidly becoming non-compliant regardless of its low biological toxicity.

Function

ABSORBENT, ANTICAKING, BINDING, EMULSION STABILISING, SKIN CONDITIONING

Skin benefits

  • Highly inert fluorocarbon solvent
  • Unique oxygen-carrying property — used historically in some niche formulations
  • Low acute toxicity at exposure

Known concerns

  • PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance) — extremely environmentally persistent
  • EU and US regulators are progressively restricting PFAS in cosmetics
  • Bioaccumulation concerns
  • Strong greenhouse gas (very high GWP)
  • Not appropriate for cosmetic use under modern regulatory trajectory
