About
Perilla leaf water — used in Asian skincare for its herbal aroma. Contains perillaldehyde, an EU-listed fragrance allergen, so labelling and caution matter.
Perilla frutescens leaf water (CAS 90082-61-4) is the steam distillate from perilla leaves, a staple aromatic herb in Asian cuisine and skincare. The distinctive aroma comes largely from perillaldehyde, which is listed as a fragrance allergen under EU Regulation 1223/2009 (Annex III additions from the 2023 SCCS extension) and requires concentration-dependent labelling. SCCS has assessed perillaldehyde for sensitisation and set guidance. The hydrosol contains lower concentrations than the essential oil, but fragrance-reactive users can still react. No Annex II prohibition applies; formulators control use level to stay within allergen thresholds.
