About

Perilla leaf water (alternate species name for P. frutescens) — shares the perillaldehyde allergen profile, so same Annex III labelling caveats apply.

Perilla ocymoides is botanically a synonym for Perilla frutescens; the leaf waters are functionally identical. The key constituent of cosmetic relevance is perillaldehyde, listed under EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex III as a fragrance allergen requiring labelling above the threshold. SCCS guidance on sensitisation applies. As a steam-distilled leaf water, allergen concentrations are lower than in the essential oil, but use-level monitoring is still needed. No Annex II prohibition applies.

Skin benefits

  • Fresh herbal aroma
  • Traditional Asian skincare ingredient
  • Mild antioxidant traces

Known concerns

  • Perillaldehyde is an Annex III fragrance allergen
  • Labelling threshold applies
  • Sensitisation risk in reactive skin
