Pethidine (meperidine) is a synthetic opioid analgesic with analgesic potency approximately 1/10th of morphine, carrying acute oral toxicity (H301), respiratory sensitization (H334), skin sensitization (H317), and organ toxicity (H372, H373) hazards. As a controlled opioid drug with abuse potential and risk of respiratory depression, it has no cosmetic application and is prohibited from such formulations in the EU.
