About
A formate ester of phenethyl alcohol — fresh green-floral notes. Formate esters hydrolyze faster than acetates, releasing formic acid.
Phenethyl formate (CAS 104-62-1) is the formate ester of 2-phenylethanol, used for fresh, green, floral, chrysanthemum-like fragrance notes. It carries FEMA GRAS flavor status. Formate esters are somewhat less hydrolytically stable than acetates; on skin and in aqueous formulas they gradually release phenethyl alcohol (well-tolerated) and formic acid (mild irritant at sufficient concentrations). At cosmetic fragrance percentages this is not a notable issue, but use-level care is warranted in acidic or high-water formulations. Not a classified sensitizer; not an EU Annex III declared allergen.
