About
A reactive isothiocyanate (the pungent principle of watercress) — chemically aggressive toward skin proteins. Not a conventional cosmetic fragrance; avoid in leave-on products.
Phenethyl isothiocyanate (CAS 2257-09-2) is a naturally occurring isothiocyanate from cruciferous plants. The N=C=S group is a strong Michael acceptor that binds to thiol and amine groups on skin proteins, driving its well-documented sensitization and irritation potential. GHS classifications commonly include acute oral toxicity, skin irritation, eye irritation, and respiratory irritation. It is investigated as a chemopreventive agent in oncology research, but that reactivity is exactly what makes it unsuitable for routine cosmetic use. No CIR or SCCS monograph supports leave-on cosmetic use at meaningful levels.
