A floral-green fragrance aldehyde used as a perfume component. Reactive chemistry and thin public safety data warrant some caution.
Phenylethoxyacetaldehyde (CAS 41847-88-5) is a synthetic fragrance aldehyde with a floral, hyacinth-like character, used in perfumery as a minor component of floral and green accords. As an alpha-alkoxy aldehyde it carries the general reactivity of aldehyde fragrances — some potential for skin-protein binding, a known mechanism underlying fragrance sensitization. It is not on the EU Annex III 26-allergen list, but IFRA guidance for fragrance aldehydes generally calls for conservative use levels. Public cosmetic-safety data is limited. Not a commonly-encountered ingredient in mainstream skincare; used in fine fragrance compositions.
