Phosphorus and metalphosphides are prohibited under Annex II of EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. These inorganic compounds are used primarily as rodenticides and pesticides. They react with moisture or gastric acid to produce phosphine (PH3), a highly toxic gas. Skin contact or ingestion from contaminated cosmetic products could result in acute phosphine poisoning.
