Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
Plant-derived sterols chemically linked to glucose — combine the skin-barrier benefits of phytosterols with the hydration benefits of glucosides, making them excellent for sensitive and dry skin.
Phytosteryl Glucoside is a conjugate of plant phytosterols (such as β-sitosterol, campesterol) and a glucose molecule linked via a glycosidic bond. Phytosterols are well known for their skin-barrier reinforcing and anti-inflammatory properties (comparable to cholesterol in human skin). The glucosylation improves water dispersibility compared to free phytosterols, making it easier to formulate. It is CosIng-listed as a skin-conditioning agent and is not restricted or banned in any major jurisdiction.
Skin benefits
- Phytosterol component — anti-inflammatory, barrier-supporting, reduces redness
- Glucoside — improves water solubility and mild hydration
- Plant-derived — appealing for natural/clean beauty formulations
Known concerns
- Glucose moiety may provide a food source for microbes — requires preservation in aqueous formulations
