About
A methylenedioxyphenyl insecticide synergist commonly used in pesticide formulations (especially head lice treatments) but not authorized as a cosmetic ingredient in the EU.
Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is a methylenedioxyphenyl synergist that inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes, thereby potentiating the activity of pyrethroid insecticides. It is regulated as an insecticide active substance under EU Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR). While it may appear in insecticide products with potential incidental dermal exposure, PBO is not listed as an authorized cosmetic ingredient and has no recognized function in skincare or personal care cosmetic formulations.
Known concerns
- No EU cosmetic ingredient authorization
- Cytochrome P450 enzyme inhibition — drug interaction potential
- Banned as intentional cosmetic ingredient — insecticide use only
