About

Tuberose polysaccharide — a plant-derived sugar polymer that gently moisturises and forms a soft skin-smoothing film. Well-tolerated and low-irritation.

Polianthes tuberosa polysaccharide is a water-soluble sugar polymer isolated from tuberose. Chemically similar to other botanical polysaccharides, it functions as a humectant and mild film-forming skin-conditioning agent, improving immediate skin feel and hydration. It is listed in EU CosIng and is typically used at 0.1-1%. As a high-molecular-weight polymer it does not penetrate the stratum corneum, giving it a very low irritation and sensitization profile; however, it requires adequate preservation once in water and formulators should watch for carryover allergens from the parent floral extract where proteins or residual fragrance compounds could transfer. No IARC listing or GHS classification for the isolated polysaccharide.

Skin benefits

  • Plant polysaccharide providing moisturisation and film formation
  • Soothing and skin-conditioning on the surface
  • Very low irritation potential

Known concerns

  • Requires robust preservation in aqueous products
  • Limited peer-reviewed cosmetic data
  • Molecular weight and composition vary by supplier
