About
A high-molecular-weight acrylic polymer used as a film-forming and suspending agent in cosmetic formulations, with an extensive safety record and no significant toxicity concerns.
Polyacrylate-51 is a synthetic acrylic polymer of high molecular weight (typically > 100,000 Da) formed from copolymerisation of HEMA, hydroxyethyl acrylamide, t-butyl methacrylate, ethylhexyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate, and PEG-8 monomethacrylate. High molecular weight acrylic polymers are categorically regarded as having negligible systemic toxicity due to inability to penetrate intact skin. They are listed in EU CosIng without restrictions and are widely used in leave-on and rinse-off cosmetics. The INCI name Polyacrylate-51 is specifically defined and not associated with any of the acrylic monomer concerns that apply to残 monomers.
Skin benefits
- Film-forming agent that improves product aesthetics and wear
- Suspending agent for pigments and actives
- Provides smooth skin feel and texture
Known concerns
- Acrylic monomers (residual) must be controlled below EU restriction limits
- Not to be used in inhalable formulations (nano-scale not applicable here)
