A branched silicone resin (silsesquioxane) with caprylyl side chains used as a film former in makeup and skincare. Skin-safe but environmentally persistent.
Polycaprylylsilsesquioxane belongs to the silsesquioxane family — cage-like branched siloxane polymers where each silicon carries one organic substituent (caprylyl/C8 here) and 1.5 oxygens on average. In cosmetics it functions as a film former and sensory modifier, giving long-wear feel and smooth spreading. Skin safety is reassuring — silicones as a class are among the least irritating polymer families and have been broadly reviewed by CIR. The main caveats are environmental: silicone polymers are persistent and some (D4/D5) are under EU restriction for microplastic-like behavior, though the silsesquioxane class is not currently restricted. Skin-contact risk is minimal.
