Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A heavier emulsifier system with seven stearic acid tails on a polyglycerin backbone, excellent for rich, stable creams.
Polyglyceryl-10 Heptastearate is the decaester of polyglycerin-10 with stearic acid, where on average 7 of the 10 hydroxyls are esterified. The high degree of esterification and long C18 chains give it strong emollient and occlusive properties. It functions as a nonionic emulsifier suitable for w/o and o/w systems and provides thickening as well. The glycerol polymerization process can generate free glycerol as a byproduct, which is regulated at up to 5% in the final cosmetic in the EU.
Skin benefits
- Rich, nourishing emolliency
- Stable emulsification
- Thickens formulations
Known concerns
- Free glycerol by product (regulated)
- Stearic acid can be mildly comedogenic in oily/acne-prone skin
