About
A polyglycerin ester of palmitic acid — works as a mild emulsifier and skin-conditioning agent that is especially valued for being naturally derived and biodegradable.
Polyglyceryl-6 Palmitate is the ester of hexaglycerin (polyglycerin-6) with palmitic acid (hexadecanoic acid). It is a nonionic emulsifier with an HLB value suitable for O/W emulsions. The polyglycerin head provides hydrophilicity and humectant properties, while the palmitic acid chain provides lipophilicity and emolliency. Polyglyceryl fatty acid esters are considered mild, biodegradable, and are often selected for 'natural' or 'clean beauty' formulations. They are not restricted in EU Annexes.
Skin benefits
- Mild biodegradable emulsifier
- Polyglycin head provides some humectant hydration
- Palmitic acid chain provides emollient skin feel
Known concerns
- Minor: Palmitic acid is comedogenic (pore-clogging) at high concentrations for some skin types
