About
A richer emulsifier with five stearic acid chains on a six-unit polyglycerin, excellent for heavy, protective formulations.
Polyglyceryl-6 Pentastearate is the pentaester of polyglycerin-6 with stearic acid, having 5 of 6 possible esterification sites occupied on average. The higher substitution provides stronger emolliency and greater formulation-thickening capacity compared to lower-substituted analogues. Functions as a nonionic emulsifier and skin-conditioning agent. The higher stearic acid content increases the occlusive film on skin, beneficial for dry skin but potentially problematic for oily skin types.
Skin benefits
- Strong barrier protection
- Rich emolliency
- Thickening
Known concerns
- More occlusive — may feel heavy on oily skin
- Stearic acid comedogenicity
