About
A cationic water-soluble polymer that deposits a conditioning film on skin and hair, reducing static and improving smoothness in rinse-off and leave-on products.
A polymeric quaternary ammonium compound (a polyquat) composed of repeating units of dimethylamino-propylamine and adipic acid, neutralized with hydrochloric acid. It adheres to negatively charged surfaces such as skin and hair via electrostatic attraction, forming a lubricious, substantive film. Not listed in EU Annexes II, III, or IV of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, meaning it is permitted for cosmetic use subject to general product safety requirements. The polymer is too large to penetrate the skin barrier.
Skin benefits
- Provides smooth, soft tactile feel on skin and hair
- Reduces static electricity and improves combability in hair-care applications
Known concerns
- May cause build-up on hair with repeated use of conditioning products
- Generally considered low-risk but not studied for prolonged daily leave-on use on broken skin
