About

A cationic (positively charged) conditioning polymer in the polyquaternium family. Makes hair smoother and easier to comb; well tolerated in rinse-off.

Polyquaternium-74 is one of many INCI-numbered cationic polymers used to condition hair and skin by electrostatic binding to negatively charged surfaces. Specific chemistry is proprietary per supplier. Polyquats as a class have generally favourable safety: low dermal absorption, minimal systemic exposure, and broad CIR coverage for other members of the family. Ocular irritation can occur at concentrated levels, which is why most polyquats are used in rinse-off formats. Aquatic toxicity is an environmental-end-of-life concern for the class.
