About

Exosome-like vesicles from nori (Porphyra yezoensis) seaweed, marketed as a plant-based skin-conditioning carrier. Promising but still thinly studied.

Porphyra yezoensis is the red alga used to make nori sheets. Cosmetic vesicle preparations are ultracentrifuged extracts containing lipid-bound microvesicles plus polysaccharides, porphyran, mycosporine-like amino acids, and trace minerals. Suppliers position them as plant-derived exosomes for antioxidant and hydration support. The underlying seaweed has a long food-safety history, but the concentrated vesicle form has no CIR or SCCS monograph and independent cosmetic efficacy data is sparse. Iodine content can be meaningful in seaweed-based ingredients, which is worth checking on label panels. Overall low-concern but evidence level is modest.
