About
Conditioned growth media from cultured callus cells of Potentilla chinensis (Chinese cinquefoil), a medicinal herb. The callus culture produces tannins, flavonoids, and hydroquinone-like compounds with demonstrated antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.
Potentilla chinensis is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant rich in hydrolyzable tannins (gallotannins, ellagitannins), flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol glycosides), and hydroquinone derivatives (arbutin, methylarbutin). Callus culture technology allows indefinite production of these compounds in bioreactors without harvesting wild plants. The conditioned media accumulates the secondary metabolites secreted by the cultured cells plus growth medium salts and sugars. The hydroquinone derivatives provide strong antimicrobial activity; arbutin is a well-known tyrosinase inhibitor (skin brightening). Tannins contribute astringency and antimicrobial effects through protein precipitation. The use of callus culture (undifferentiated plant cells) may produce slightly different metabolite ratios than the intact plant.
Function
Skin benefits
- Strong antimicrobial activity from hydroquinone derivatives
- Antioxidant flavonoids protect against free radical damage
- Astringent tannins tighten and tone skin
- Arbutin provides skin brightening through tyrosinase inhibition
- Anti-inflammatory effects from ellagitannins
Known concerns
- Hydroquinone derivatives may cause ochronosis with prolonged use at high concentrations
- Tannins may cause irritation on broken skin
- Callus culture metabolites not fully characterized for long-term topical safety
- Possible photosensitization from flavonoids
