Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A propoxylated and ethoxylated alcohol — functions as a surfactant and emulsifier in cosmetic formulations. The mixed EO/PO chain gives it both water- and oil-binding properties.
PPG-3-Isosteareth-9 is a mixed ethoxylated-propoxylated isostearyl alcohol with approximately 9 moles EO and 3 moles PO per mole of isostearyl alcohol. It functions as a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier. Isostearyl alcohol is a branched C18 alcohol known for its excellent skin compatibility and low irritation potential. However, combined ethoxylation/propoxylation introduces standard concerns for residual monomers and processing impurities. The ingredient is listed in CosIng but not restricted in EU Annexes.
Skin benefits
- Branched alcohol base (isostearyl) is known for excellent skin tolerance
- Emulsifying — helps blend water and oil phases
Known concerns
- Ethylene oxide and propylene oxide trace contamination concerns
- Possible sensitization at high concentrations
