About
A combined ethoxylated and propoxylated fatty alcohol surfactant used as an emulsifier and solubiliser in cosmetic formulations.
PPG-6 C12-18 PARETH-11 is the INCI designation for alcohols C12-18 that have been both ethoxylated (11 mol EO) and propoxylated (6 mol PO). It is not specifically restricted under EU Regulation 1223/2009 and is used as a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier. Like all ethoxylated ingredients, it may contain trace 1,4-dioxane as a manufacturing by-product, which is restricted under EU REACH. PEG/PO ingredients may increase skin penetration and are generally considered mild but may not suit very sensitive skin.
Skin benefits
- Effective emulsifier for stable cosmetic formulations
- Provides solubilisation for hydrophobic actives
- Non-ionic surfactant with generally good skin compatibility
Known concerns
- May contain trace 1,4-dioxane from ethoxylation process (EU REACH restricted impurity)
- EO/PO polymers may increase skin penetration of other ingredients
- Not suitable for products marketed as 'PEG-free'
- May be sensitising in damaged or eczema-prone skin
