beta-Propiolactone (CAS 57-57-8) is a reactive lactone that was previously used as a sterilizing agent and intermediate in cosmetic formulations. EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II prohibits its use in cosmetic products. The compound carries hazard statements including H227 (combustible liquid), H301 (toxic if swallowed), H315 (causes skin irritation), H317 (may cause allergic skin reaction), H319 (causes serious eye irritation), H330 (fatal if inhaled), H335 (may cause respiratory irritation), H340 (may cause genetic defects), H350 (may cause cancer), and H351 (suspected of causing cancer).
