About
A small, highly reactive aldehyde — flammable, eye-damaging, and protein-reactive. An industrial intermediate rather than a cosmetic-appropriate fragrance.
Propionaldehyde (propanal, CAS 123-38-6) is a short-chain aliphatic aldehyde. Standard GHS classifications include highly flammable liquid (H225), skin irritation, serious eye damage (H318), and respiratory irritation (H335); several classifications list it as a suspected mutagen under certain regulatory frameworks. Short-chain aldehydes cross membranes readily and react with protein amines and thiols to form adducts. It has no CIR/SCCS supportive cosmetic monograph. Any "fragrance" role is more accurately that of an intermediate or impurity, not a formulation ingredient.
