About
Cherry pit (shell) powder — a biodegradable natural exfoliant replacing plastic microbeads.
Prunus avium shell powder (CAS 85566-22-9) is finely milled sweet-cherry pits, a by-product of fruit processing. It is chemically composed of cellulose and lignin with trace cherry-kernel oils and is used as a natural abrasive in exfoliating scrubs, replacing polyethylene microbeads. EU CosIng lists it for abrasive and exfoliating functions. No Annex II/III restrictions; no CIR adverse findings. Safety is driven by particle size and shape — well-rounded, graded powders are gentle, but coarse or angular lots can micro-abrade sensitive skin. Biodegradable and environmentally preferable to plastic microbeads.
Skin benefits
- Biodegradable natural exfoliant
- Alternative to plastic microbeads
- Renewable by-product of cherry processing
Known concerns
- Abrasiveness — can micro-scratch sensitive skin if too coarse
- Particle size critical for safety
- Not suitable for eye area
