About

Bakuchiol vesicles — plant vesicles containing psoralen that may cause photosensitivity; requires careful formulation and sun protection.

Psoralea corylifolia (babchi) fruit vesicles contain psoralens including psoralen and isopsoralen (bakuchiol-related compounds). These furanocoumarins are phototoxic — they absorb UV radiation and can cause severe photosensitivity reactions including photodermatitis and hyperpigmentation. The vesicles isolated from the fruit concentrate these compounds. Widely used in traditional Asian medicine but requires caution in topical applications.

Skin benefits

  • Traditional use for skin pigmentation conditions
  • Potential anti-inflammatory properties
  • Contains bakuchiol (retinol-like compound)

Known concerns

  • Strong photosensitizer — absorbs UV and can cause photodermatitis
  • May cause severe skin irritation and hyperpigmentation when combined with sun exposure
  • Traditional use but limited modern cosmetic safety data
