Pyrocatechol (CAS 120-80-9) is classified as a skin sensitizer (H317), causes serious eye irritation (H319), and is suspected of causing genetic defects (H341) under CLP Regulation. EU Annex III to Regulation 1223/2009 prohibits its use in cosmetic products at concentrations equal to or greater than 0.1% as a constituent of other substances or mixtures. It has been associated with dermal sensitization and has been reviewed for carcinogenic potential.
