About
A fusion of bacterial collagenase and a synthetic hexapeptide, designed to promote extracellular matrix remodelling in skin.
This recombinant fusion combines a Clostridium-derived collagenase domain with Hexapeptide-40, expressed in E. coli. Bacterial collagenases are enzymes capable of degrading collagen and are generally restricted in EU cosmetics to low concentrations to avoid tissue irritation. The peptide component is a short synthetic sequence with no known toxicity. Combined, the ingredient occupies a borderline safety profile — effective at low concentrations but requiring careful formulation controls due to enzymatic activity.
Function
Skin benefits
- May assist skin remodelling by selectively degrading damaged collagen
- Hexapeptide component may provide targeted peptide signalling
Known concerns
- Enzymatic collagenase activity may cause irritation at higher concentrations
- EU Annex III restricts enzyme-based cosmetic ingredients to prevent tissue damage
- Risk of sensitisation from bacterial protein contaminants
