RETINOL/SACCHAROMYCES POLYPEPTIDE
Safety score · 0–100
Moderate
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A hybrid of retinol complexed with a yeast-derived polypeptide. Packs real retinoid activity — with the usual retinol caveats on irritation and pregnancy.
Retinol/Saccharomyces polypeptide is a composite INCI combining retinol (vitamin A alcohol) with a polypeptide derived from Saccharomyces (baker's/brewer's yeast) fermentation. The peptide component is intended to act as a carrier or stabiliser for retinol, which is otherwise prone to oxidation and can be irritating. Retinol itself is a regulated ingredient in the EU, with SCCS concluding in 2022 that topical use should be capped (typically 0.05% in body products and 0.3% in face/hand leave-on products). Users can experience dryness, flaking, erythema and photosensitivity, and high-strength retinoids are generally avoided in pregnancy. The yeast polypeptide fraction is benign on its own; the score here is driven by the retinoid.
