About

Natural rubber latex from Hevea brasiliensis carrying serious health warnings including respiratory sensitisation, carcinogenicity, and flammability hazards.

Natural rubber latex is a complex mixture of polyisoprene proteins, lipids, and inorganic components. The extensive hazard profile (H317 skin sensitisation, H334 respiratory sensitisation, H350 carcinogenicity, H304 aspiration hazard, multiple environmental hazards) makes this ingredient highly controversial in cosmetic products. The EU has assessed natural rubber latex as a contact allergen, and products containing it must be labelled with 'Natural rubber latex' if present.

Skin benefits

  • Film-forming for water-resistant barrier products
  • Elasticity in formulation

Known concerns

  • H317/H334: severe skin and respiratory sensitisation
  • H350: suspected carcinogen classification
  • H304: aspiration hazard if used in lip products
  • Very wide hazard profile across H3xx, H4xx series
