A synthetic oligopeptide fragment derived from botulinum neurotoxin type A, one of the most potent biological toxins known, raising significant safety concerns for cosmetic use.
s-Clostridium Botulinum Oligopeptide-1 is a single-chain synthetic peptide fragment derived from the sequence of Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A produced by Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum neurotoxin type A is one of the most potent biological substances known (toxic dose in humans estimated at 1-2 ng/kg). While the peptide fragment is small (subject protein has up to 1500 aa, fragment unspecified), the explicit derivation from botulinum neurotoxin presents severe regulatory and safety concerns under EU cosmetics law. Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 Annex II lists substances identified as unsafe for cosmetic use; substances of biological origin with acute toxicity, including clostridial toxins, fall under heightened scrutiny. No confirmed safe cosmetic use of botulinum toxin fragments is established in EU regulatory literature.
Function
Skin benefits
- Botulinum toxin fragments are investigated in very specialized contexts for神经肌肉 blocking effects
- Cosmetic application faces severe regulatory barriers within the EU
Known concerns
- Botulinum neurotoxin type A is classified as a Category 1 substance (most potent) in EU poison classification frameworks
- Explicit derivation from Clostridium botulinum will likely trigger regulatory concern and potential restriction under Annex II
- No established safe cosmetic precedent in EU; SCCS safety evaluation unlikely to support cosmetic use
- Fragments of neurotoxic proteins may retain some biological activity or trigger immune responses
