About

The classic artificial sweetener — primarily used in lip balms, toothpaste and mouthwash to mask bitterness. IARC removed it from the carcinogen list in 1999 and EFSA confirms it as safe at use levels.

Skin benefits

  • Adds sweetness to lip products and oral care without sugar
  • Functions at very low use levels
  • Long safety record after IARC declassification

Known concerns

  • Historical rodent bladder-tumour finding (not relevant to humans)
  • Possible bitter aftertaste at higher doses
  • Sodium-saccharin form contains sodium
