About
A versatile plant-derived ingredient used to improve skin texture and hydration in cosmetic formulations.
Schoenocaulon officinale, also known as sabadilla or cevadilla, is a plant whose seeds contain toxic alkaloids including veratridine and cevadiam. These compounds are potent neurotoxins historically used as insecticides. Sabadilla seed preparations have very limited use in modern cosmetics due to their toxic profile. The ingredient is not listed in EU Annex II (banned substances), but its toxic alkaloid content represents a significant safety concern that restricts its use to very specialized formulations under strict controls.
Skin benefits
- Contains antimicrobial compounds (historical insecticide use)
- Limited cosmetic application — not recommended
Known concerns
- Contains toxic Veratrum alkaloids — neurotoxic concern
- Not approved as cosmetic ingredient in many jurisdictions
- Severe irritation potential from alkaloid content
- Very limited cosmetic application due to toxicity
