Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A recombinant human interleukin-1 alpha analogue produced in E. coli, used in skin conditioning formulations.
This recombinant human peptide mirrors interleukin-1 alpha, a pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in wound healing and skin homeostasis. Produced by E. coli fermentation with a maximum of 272 amino acids, it contains only standard amino acids. The EU classifies recombinant cytokines and analogues under Annex II entry 416. While IL-1α has potent biological activity, topical cosmetic use at low concentrations is generally considered safe; however, the cytokine-like nature of this ingredient requires careful formulation to avoid inflammatory responses.
Function
Skin benefits
- May stimulate wound healing and skin repair cascades
- Potential for supporting skin barrier homeostasis
Known concerns
- Cytokine-like activity — potential for pro-inflammatory responses in sensitive skin
- Trace endotoxin risk from E. coli production system
- Not recommended for use on compromised or inflamed skin
