About
A shea-derived mild surfactant — like cocamidopropyl betaine but from shea fatty acids. Gentle and moisturising.
Shea butteramidopropyl betaine is an amphoteric surfactant produced by amidation and quaternisation of shea butter fatty acids, analogous to cocamidopropyl betaine. It functions as a secondary surfactant, foam booster, viscosity modifier and skin-conditioning co-surfactant. The CIR panel has reviewed the amidopropyl betaine family as safe as used, noting contact-allergy potential tied to residual amidoamine and dimethylaminopropylamine intermediates — reputable suppliers control these to low ppm. Mildness is superior to primary anionics.
Skin benefits
- Mild amphoteric surfactant derived from shea butter fatty acids
- Secondary surfactant that boosts foam and softens harsher cleansing systems
- Skin-conditioning during and after wash
Known concerns
- Residual amidoamine impurities — same concern as cocamidopropyl betaine
- Potential low-incidence contact allergy
- Shea-derived — rare cross-reactivity in latex-allergic individuals reported
