About
Silver Acetylmethionate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Silver Acetylmethionate is the silver salt of N-acetylmethionine, combining the antimicrobial properties of silver ions with a biocompatible amino acid carrier. Silver and silver compounds have a long history of use as antimicrobial agents in medical and cosmetic contexts. At low cosmetic concentrations silver is generally well-tolerated, but prolonged use can lead to argyria (skin discoloration from silver deposition) and silver accumulation in tissues. EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 does not specifically list silver acetylmethionate in Annexes II or III, but silver compounds are reviewed under general safety provisions.
Skin benefits
- Antimicrobial properties useful in preservative systems
- Silver ions provide broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity
Known concerns
- Silver accumulation in body tissues with prolonged use
- Risk of argyria (blue-gray skin discoloration) with chronic exposure
- Silver may disrupt skin microbiome at antimicrobial concentrations
