About
A silver-doped titanium carbide — niche antimicrobial composite. Thin safety data; silver poses ecotoxicity concerns.
Silver/titanium carbide is a composite inorganic material combining silver with titanium carbide (TiC). The silver fraction provides antimicrobial activity; titanium carbide gives hardness and thermal stability. Cosmetic use is very niche. EU Regulation 1223/2009 controls silver usage tightly: colloidal silver and silver thiosulphate appear in Annex III with concentration limits, and the SCCS has flagged nano-silver under scrutiny. Silver particles also have well-documented aquatic ecotoxicity. The combination has no dedicated CIR review and limited public toxicology data.
Function
Skin benefits
- Inorganic composite with antimicrobial potential from silver component
- Claimed abrasive or functional particle for specialty applications
- Durable, heat-stable material
Known concerns
- Silver content flags ecotoxicity and bioaccumulation
- EU limits silver in cosmetic use (Annex III entry 88 for silver thiosulphate; silver ion activity regulated)
- Very little cosmetic-specific safety data
