About
Steareth-50 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Steareth-50 is the polyethylene glycol 50-mole ether of stearyl alcohol (n-octadecanol). Listed in CosIng with emulsifying and surfactant functions. The very high EO degree (50) makes Steareth-50 highly water-soluble and primarily used as a solubilizer rather than a primary emulsifier. EU cosmetic regulation does not list Steareth-50 in any Annex restriction. The high EO number reduces potential for skin penetration and barrier interaction. The steareth class generally has favorable CIR safety conclusions, but the very high EO variants like Steareth-50 have somewhat less extensive dedicated testing. 1,4-dioxane impurity monitoring is required under EU GMP.
Skin benefits
- Excellent solubilizer for aqueous cosmetic formulations
- Effective for solubilizing fragrances and oil-soluble actives
- Highly water-soluble, suitable for clear formulations
Known concerns
- 1,4-dioxane trace contamination from high EO ethoxylation process
- Mild eye irritation possible
- Limited dedicated toxicological data for this specific high-EO variant
