Steareth-8 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
STEARETH-8 is a nonionic surfactant derived from stearyl alcohol (C18) with approximately 8 moles of ethylene oxide. It appears on the EU Cosmetics Regulation positive list (Annex III) with specific restrictions on maximum concentration in rinse-off products. The ethoxylation degree of 8 makes it moderately hydrophilic while retaining good emulsifying properties for oil phases. Purity requirements under EU law mandate control of residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane.
Skin benefits
- Effective emulsifier for stable oil-in-water emulsions
- Opacifying properties improve visual aesthetics of formulations
Known concerns
- Low to moderate EO degree may cause mild skin irritation, particularly in leave-on formulations
- EU Annex III restricts use in rinse-off products at specific concentration limits
- Potential 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide contamination requires quality control
