Safety score · 0–100
Fine
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A fatty alcohol acetate derived from stearyl alcohol used as a skin-conditioning emollient and fragrance ingredient in cosmetics — no EU restrictions.
Stearyl Acetate (octadecyl acetate) is the acetate ester of stearyl alcohol (C18 fatty alcohol). It functions as a skin-conditioning emollient and fragrance ingredient in cosmetic formulations. Stearyl alcohol and its derivatives are listed in EU CosIng without restrictions and have a long history of safe use in cosmetics and topical pharmaceuticals. The acetate form is slowly hydrolysed on skin to stearyl alcohol and acetic acid — both inherently safe. Used in lip care, skincare, and hair care products at typical concentrations of 0.5–5%.
