About
A cosmetic ingredient. Raw material has significant toxicity. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Strophanthins (including ouabain, k-strophanthin) are cardiotonic glycosides from Strophanthus species. They inhibit Na+/K+-ATPase with potency similar to digitalis glycosides. EU CLP classification includes H301/H331 (toxic if swallowed/inhaled) and H373 (organ toxicity). The EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex II prohibits these compounds due to their extreme cardiac toxicity and narrow safety margin. Even trace dermal absorption could produce life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.
Known concerns
- Cardiac glycoside toxicity
- Na+/K+-ATPase inhibitor
- Narrow therapeutic index
- Acute toxicity H301/H331
- Risk of fatal cardiac arrhythmias
- Banned in EU cosmetics (Annex II)
