About

A sulfonated, crosslinked styrene/divinylbenzene polymer used as an ion-binding or pH-control aid. Polymer safety is generally favorable, but residual monomer QC matters.

Sulfonated styrene/DVB crosspolymer is the same chemistry as strong-acid cation-exchange resins (think water softener beads) formulated for cosmetic use. The crosslinked network is too large to penetrate skin, and functional use is as a pH/ion adjuster or controlled-release matrix. Safety hinges on supplier quality control: residual styrene monomer (a possible human carcinogen, IARC 2A) and unreacted sulfonate groups must be below cosmetic thresholds. Not extensively reviewed by CIR, but related cosmetic sulfonated polymers have favorable safety records. The sulfonic-acid form is acidic and can sting compromised skin.
