About

A chelating agent combining triethanolamine with EDTA, subject to EU restriction III/62 but raises nitrosamine formation concerns.

TEA-EDTA (CAS 60544-70-9) is a combination of triethanolamine (TEA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) that functions as a chelating agent and pH adjuster in cosmetic formulations. EU CosIng shows restriction III/62, which applies to TEA substances in general. EDTA is permitted but restricted for use in rinse-off products only in some jurisdictions. The primary concern with TEA in cosmetics is the potential for nitrosamine formation when combined with nitrate or nitrite sources. TEA itself may cause skin and eye irritation. In EU, TEA is permitted in cosmetic products but subject to concentration limits and purity requirements. Not recommended for use in leave-on products intended for prolonged skin contact.

Skin benefits

  • Chelates metal ions to improve product stability
  • pH buffering

Known concerns

  • Nitrosamine formation potential with nitrate/nitrite
  • Skin and eye irritation
  • EU restriction III/62 applies
  • Not recommended for leave-on mucosal products
