About

A sulfate-based anionic surfactant neutralised with triethanolamine, subject to EU restrictions limiting its use primarily to rinse-off products at defined concentrations.

TEA-Oleyl Sulfate is listed in EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC 1223/2009) Annex III under reference III/62, which restricts its use in cosmetic products. The restriction limits the maximum concentration and specifies it is primarily for rinse-off products due to the potential for skin sensitisation associated with sulfate surfactants and secondary amine neutrality with TEA. There is also a theoretical nitrosamine formation risk given the combination of triethanolamine with an alkyl sulfate moiety, requiring pH control and absence of nitrosating agents.

Skin benefits

  • Effective anionic surfactant for cleansing formulations
  • Produces good foaming lather in body washes and shampoos

Known concerns

  • EU Annex III restricted ingredient; concentration and product-type limits apply
  • Potential skin and eye irritation from sulfate surfactant moiety
  • Theoretical nitrosamine formation risk with triethanolamine under nitrosating conditions
  • Not permitted in leave-on products without specific justification
