Tetrabenazine is a VMAT2 inhibitor pharmaceutical used clinically for chorea associated with Huntington's disease and hyperkinetic movement disorders. Its mechanism of action involves depletion of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin from nerve terminals. The EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex III restricts tetrabenazine and its salts at ≥0.1% in cosmetic products. Acute oral toxicity is noted (H302), and its CNS pharmacological activity makes topical cosmetic use inappropriate.
