A sandalwood-type fragrance ingredient with a warm, woody aroma and a generally favorable safety profile in cosmetic applications.
Tetrahydromugol (also known as Timberanel or 2-ethyl-4-(2,2,3,6-tetramethylcyclohexyl)but-3-en-1-ol) is a synthetic sandalwood-type fragrance that mimics the odor profile of natural sandalwood oil. It is structurally related to sandalwood alcohols and is used as a replacement for natural sandalwood which faces supply and sustainability concerns. The compound is not listed in EU Annex II (banned) or Annex III (restricted) under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. Based on repeated insult patch test data, it demonstrates low skin sensitization potential at fragrance use concentrations.
