About
A glossy, high-refractive-index phenyl silicone fluid used in lip and color cosmetics. Inert and non-irritating; main caveat is environmental persistence.
Tetramethyl tetraphenyl trisiloxane (CAS 3982-82-9) is a phenyl-substituted silicone fluid in the same class as phenyl trimethicone and trimethyl pentaphenyl trisiloxane. The four phenyl groups confer a very high refractive index that gives lip glosses, foundations, and hair products a wet, glossy finish. The trisiloxane backbone is non-volatile, chemically inert, and not absorbed through skin. CIR has reviewed phenyl-trimethicone-class silicones as safe for cosmetic use. The principal concern is environmental persistence: silicones break down slowly. No CMR, endocrine, or human-irritation flags at cosmetic levels.
