About

A xanthine derivative (similar to caffeine) used in anti-cellulite and slimming cosmetic formulations for its lipolytic and bronchodilatory properties.

Theophylline is a methylxanthine alkaloid related to caffeine and theobromine. It is not restricted under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 but has been subject to discussion regarding safe use levels in topical formulations. Theophylline has demonstrated lipolytic activity (fat breakdown) making it popular in anti-cellulite products. The ingredient is generally well tolerated topically but may cause mild irritation in sensitive individuals or at high concentrations.

Skin benefits

  • Lipolytic activity: may help reduce appearance of cellulitis
  • Bronchodilatory properties useful in slimming formulations
  • Stimulates microcirculation

Known concerns

  • May cause skin irritation at high concentrations
  • Bronchodilatory activity means systemic absorption should be minimized
  • Not recommended for use around eyes or mucous membranes
  • Mild diuretic effect
