About
Oriental arborvitae leaf water — traditional but problematic. Thuja essential oils contain thujone, a neuroactive terpene with regulatory restrictions.
Thuja Orientalis Leaf Water (now often classified as Platycladus orientalis) is the hydrosol co-product of steam distillation of oriental arborvitae leaves. While hydrosols carry far less essential oil than the distilled oil itself, residual terpenes including alpha- and beta-thujone, fenchone, and borneol are typically present. Thujone is a GABA-A antagonist with documented neurotoxicity at substantial oral doses; EU law restricts thujone in foods and fragrance, and IFRA limits thuja oil in leave-on products. Traditional East Asian cosmetic use focuses on scalp and hair preparations, but thujone content, pregnancy caution, and terpene sensitization combine to make this a use-with-care botanical.
